PSD stands for “Photoshop Document”, and is the native file format of Adobe Photoshop. It is a file that can contain several layers with vectors, objects, text, images, photos, effects and filters, with or without alpha transparency.
Photoshop is the right app to open a PSD as its the only one that allows to edit these files. However there are some alternatives that will permit you to see it as a flattened image, such as Paint.Net, GIMP, Photopea, Google Drive, macOS preview, InfranView, XnView. Another option is to convert the file using our Convert Tool, which allows you to convert from and to PSD to or from PNG, JPG, SVG, EPS and more.
The only application that allows you to edit a PSD file is Photoshop. You can use it to manipulate and edit existing images, photos, and illustrations, or create new ones as design projects. Note: PSD files are not used as a final product to be displayed, but files of other extensions are exported from Photoshop, such as PNG, JPEG, GIF, PDF, EPS, SVG, etc.
